Simultaneity of Time
(Series of 10)
graphite, kaolin on linen over aluminum panels 27”x 27”

Numbered Breaths was an ongoing series of drawings begun after having pneumonia. As soon as I could stand at the drawing table, I wrote a number consecutively for each breath taken, starting at center point of round paper slowly spiral outward, but never stopping until the edge of the paper.

Numbers placed counterclockwise while the page is turned clockwise give a feeling of being in the present, calm the mind, draw away from the extraneous and allow centeredness for the healing process. Gloria Graham

Gloria Graham has figured out how to stop time. Starting with a circular piece of paper, she writes the number one in the center. She continues to write numbers sequentially (for each breath taken) – 2, 2, 4, and so on – in a counterclockwise circle while moving the paper clockwise. The numbers spiral backward while time moves forward. For Graham, this stops time and places her in the present.” Guy Cross
